Using a link shortener?
A long UTM link can be wrapped in a short link. Add the tags first, then shorten the full tracked link.
When someone clicks, the short link sends them on to the long one. Your analytics reads the tags on the page they land on, so tracking keeps working.
- Do not add tags to the short link itself. Many shorteners drop them.
- If a shortener lets you edit the target later, a change there changes your tracking too.
- Click counts in the shortener and visits in GA4 will rarely match. Some people leave before the page loads.
- Test it once. Click the short link and check that the final address still shows your utm_ tags.
Nothing leaves your browser. Your last inputs are remembered on this device.
The 5 UTM parameters.
Each one adds a small piece of info to your link. Only the first 3 are needed.
utm_sourceWhere the click came from. Example: instagram.
utm_mediumThe kind of channel. Example: social, or paid-social for ads.
utm_campaignThe name of your push. Example: spring-sale-2026.
utm_contentWhich link it was, when you have more than 1. Example: bio-link, story or ad-a.
utm_termA keyword. Mostly for paid search ads. Most social links leave it empty.
A naming rule that lasts.
Reports get messy fast when every person names things their own way.
- Lowercase only. "Instagram" and "instagram" count as 2 sources.
- No spaces. Use dashes. A space turns into %20 or a plus sign and looks broken.
- Same words every time. Pick "social" for the medium and keep it. Do not mix "social", "Social-Media" and "soc".
- Name the campaign by what and when. Example: spring-sale-2026.
- Keep a list. Put your names in 1 shared sheet so the whole team uses the same ones.
Tip for GA4: Google sorts traffic into groups by the medium. Plain values like "social", "paid-social", "email" and "cpc" land in the right group. Odd values can end up as "Unassigned".
See the results in GA4.
Google Analytics 4 reads the tags on its own. You do not set anything up.
- Post your tracked link and click it once yourself.
- In GA4, open Reports, then Realtime. Your visit shows up within a minute or so.
- To see it over time, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
- Above the table, change the first column (the "primary dimension") to Session campaign or Session source / medium.
- For content and term, open Explore and make a free-form table. Add the dimensions Session manual ad content and Session manual term.
If the menu looks different, the labels have likely moved. The names of the dimensions stay the same. A missing campaign name shows as "(not set)". Data can take a few hours to appear in the normal reports.

01What is a UTM?
A UTM is a short tag you add to the end of a link. It tells your analytics tool where the click came from. The name comes from "Urchin Tracking Module", an old analytics product that Google bought and built into Google Analytics.
02Do UTMs hurt SEO?
No. Google treats the page the same with or without them. If you worry about duplicate pages, a canonical tag on the page points search engines to the clean version. Most sites already have one.
03Are UTMs case sensitive?
Yes. "Instagram" and "instagram" show up as 2 different sources in your reports. Write everything in lowercase and the problem never starts. The "Lowercase" option in the tool does it for you.
04Can I use UTMs on an Instagram bio link?
Yes. The bio link is a normal web address, so UTM tags work. Use 1 link for the bio and set the content to "bio-link", so you can tell it apart from a link in a story or an ad.
05Should I use UTMs on links inside my own website?
No. A UTM starts a new visit in your analytics. If you tag a link between 2 of your own pages, you break the original source of that visit. Use UTMs only on links that come from outside your site.
06Can I make many UTM links at once?
Yes. Switch to "Many links", paste up to 50 web addresses (1 per line) and pick your networks. You get a table with the original link, the network and the tracked link. Copy it all or download a CSV. Any line that is not a valid web address is listed so you can fix it.
07Can I use a link shortener with UTM links?
Yes. Build the full tracked link first, then shorten that link. The short link sends people on to the long one, so your analytics still reads the tags. Do not add tags to the short link itself, because many shorteners drop them. Click the short link once and check that the final address still has your utm_ tags.
08Do I need all 5 parameters?
No. Source, medium and campaign are the 3 that matter most. Content and term are optional extras for when you test different links or keywords.
